Boston Children’s Hospital, Brookline

The Boston Children's Hospital project holds a great deal of meaning for me.  The project involved the design of three separate buildings on a BCH annex campus in the quiet neighborhood of Brookline in Boston.  I was granted the opportunity to take on an a new and challenging role -- managing construction administration for the garage and medical office building.  Under the tutelage of the EMA QAQC team and my project mentor, I observed all site activities, wrote field reports, answered RFIs and submittals, and, most importantly, I was able to develop strong working relationships with the contractor, construction manager, and consultants.  No amount of fanciful drawing can fill the knowledge gap like real construction administration can.

A Little Bit of Design as Well...

Outside of documentation on this project, I did have the opportunity to design the structure and pattern of our perforated metal screen system that adorns the garage.  Again, Zahner served as the design-assist contractor and manufacturer for the screen.  The drawings below illustrate four final options considered by the client at the end of the design process.  Thankfully, they nixed the vegetal patterns and settled on a subtle gradient of open to closed perforations.  So many options, so little time!
